AEDs (Automated External Defibrillator)

An AED, automated external defibrillator, is a life-saving device. They are used to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest. 

It's a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use, medical device that can analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver an electrical shock, or defibrillation, to help the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. Our AED program is an integral part of the University's commitment to the safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and guests.

The University of Notre Dame collaborates with ZOLL^® Medical Corporation, an Asahi Kasei Group Company to provide Cardiac Science AEDs on our campus. There are Powerheart G3 and G5 units located across campus. Both AEDs are made for novice first responders and advanced responders. They feature voice and text screen coaching steps to facilitate you during usage. The machine will prompt you to call 911, provide compressions, and shocks, if required.

All campus AEDs are loaded into the Pulse Point AED App. This app, once dowloaded to a mobile device, will direct the user to the nearest AED on a digital map. Not only will this identify AEDs on campus, but will identify any registered AED nationally.
